Just off Route 9 in Framingham, Massachusetts, J&M Diner has spent nearly three decades proving that a true mom-and-pop breakfast spot can survive fire, rebuild from nothing, and still come out swinging.

Named after the two oldest daughters of owners Dave and Karen Fiore, this family-run institution has become the kind of place where regulars show up before sunrise just to beat the weekend line.

This is a story about giant pancakes, a devastating fire, and a family that refused to let breakfast die. 🍳🔥

How J&M Diner won Framingham’s hearts

J&M Diner opened its doors in 1998 inside a former donut shop in Framingham’s Old Path Village, with barely any equipment and a whole lot of ambition.

Dave and Karen Fiore built the whole concept around family from day one.

The “J” stands for their oldest daughter, Juliana, and the “M” stands for their second daughter, Mihlan, while their youngest daughter, Simone, later got her own tribute on the diner’s staff shirts and counter.

Everything was humming along for nearly two decades until March 11, 2017, when a fire tore through the Old Path Village Shopping Plaza and destroyed the diner completely, along with the family’s personal photos.

Within hours of the fire, the Fiore family said they felt an outpouring of support from friends, neighbors, and loyal customers who had grown attached to the little diner that could.

That support helped fuel a comeback, and by late 2017 J&M reopened in a new, larger location on Worcester Road, growing from a 1,238-square-foot, 50-seat spot into a 3,500-square-foot dining room that seats around 100 people.

The bigger space didn’t change what made the place special.

Every daughter still works at the diner, alongside general manager Libby White, who the family calls their unofficial fourth daughter, and the whole crew still greets customers in matching pajama-style uniforms that have become something of a signature look. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧

Word of the diner’s massive portions and playful menu spread well beyond Framingham, eventually landing J&M a feature on Phantom Gourmet, where host Dan Andelman called it “probably the biggest breakfast you’re ever going to eat” in New England.

The signature Sweet Potato Hash, built from grass-fed beef, sweet potatoes, onions, and craisins, became the dish that TV crews and regulars alike kept pointing to as the one thing you absolutely have to order.

That reputation for oversized, playful comfort food kept the community showing up long after the ribbon-cutting excitement faded, and today J&M functions as a genuine neighborhood breakfast institution built on family loyalty as much as flapjacks. 💯

Atmosphere

J&M runs on high energy and genuine warmth, with servers in matching pajama-style uniforms and a soundtrack that keeps the whole dining room feeling upbeat. 🎶

The larger post-fire location comfortably seats around 100 guests, but weekend mornings still bring lines out the door, especially for early risers chasing a table before the rush.

It is loud, busy, and unapologetically fun, the kind of place built for big appetites and bigger portions.

Nothing here feels rushed or corporate, and that family energy is impossible to miss the moment you walk in.

Bottom Line

A genuine family story, a comeback from a devastating fire, oversized signature dishes like the Sweet Potato Hash, a menu built for serious appetites, and a team that still greets you like family make J&M Diner a Framingham breakfast institution worth the wait. 🍳✨
