How Monarch Kitchen & Bar won Davenport’s hearts

Monarch Kitchen & Bar’s story is really the story of Chef Matt Fenton, whose path to Davenport wound through some of the country’s most respected kitchens.

Fenton earned a scholarship to Johnson & Wales University through the Careers Through Culinary Arts Program after discovering his passion for cooking as a child, eventually graduating with a degree in Food Service Management.

His real education, though, came under one very specific mentor. 👨‍🍳

Fenton spent nearly a decade as Food & Beverage Manager for chef Mark Tarbell’s restaurant group in Phoenix and Denver, an experience that included cooking a meal at the James Beard Foundation House in New York City.

After moving to the Quad Cities, Fenton saw an opportunity to bring elevated, contemporary cooking to the Midwest while still highlighting local produce, and he opened Monarch Kitchen & Bar in late summer 2020.

The restaurant also earned Fenton accreditation from the Court of Master Sommeliers, giving Monarch’s wine program the same level of expertise found in its kitchen.

Locals quickly took notice of small but unusual touches, like American sturgeon caviar service and a beloved “Lobsta Roll,” items rarely found on menus anywhere in the region.

Add a compact, carefully curated menu that changes with the seasons and a genuine passion for using simple ingredients in inventive ways, and it becomes clear why this Davenport hidden gem has earned such devoted local loyalty. ✨
