How Oscar’s Won Barboursville’s Hearts
Jason Beter had a clear vision from the very beginning: fresh burgers with unique toppings, all-day breakfast, and a serious craft beer selection built entirely around independent breweries.
Oscar’s opened its doors on February 4, 2017, born out of years of Jason traveling for work and spending his downtime scouting locally-owned burger joints and craft beer pubs across the country. 🙌
Jason’s oldest son Lukas, then a sophomore at Marshall University, was recruited as co-creator of the entire menu — and the story of how that menu came together is the kind of thing food lovers live for.
Lukas, completely self-taught, drove to Kroger with a couple of hundred dollars and spent days alone in his apartment in East Pea Ridge developing sauces, testing flavor combinations, and building recipes from scratch, fueled entirely by instinct, ambition, and a deep love of savory and heat.
By June 2019, Oscar’s had outgrown its original space, and after ten weeks of renovation, a larger, expanded location opened on the same stretch of US-60 — with a full kitchen, more seating, a longer bar, and 30 craft taps dedicated exclusively to independent breweries. 🍺
Lukas also runs a new featured off-menu burger every single weekend, testing inventive creations on an eager and enthusiastic customer base — giving regulars a reason to come back every weekend, wondering what he’ll dream up next.
Meanwhile, Jason’s wife, sister, mother, and father-in-law have all been woven into the fabric of this place from the very beginning — and youngest son Noah now serves as head brewer for the family’s growing Koerber Beer Company.
