On the corner of North Limestone and Third Street in Lexington’s NoLi district, there is a former gas station that smells like fresh coffee, hot beignets, and something unmistakably New Orleans — and on any given morning, there is very likely a line out the door. ☀️🍳
Doodles Breakfast & Lunch is a locally-owned Lexington breakfast institution where New Orleans-inspired Creole comfort food meets Kentucky’s finest locally sourced farms — a combination so right, so warm, and so deeply community-rooted that it has kept this quirky repurposed gas station packed for nearly two decades.

How Doodles Won Lexington’s Hearts
The concept originated with Lillie Ruschell, a Louisiana native whose love of New Orleans cuisine planted the seed — a vision of bringing shrimp and grits, beignets, and the soulful, spice-forward cooking of the bayou to a city that had never quite experienced anything like it.
Sue Harkins and Lynda Mellin, both with strong ties to Louisiana, brought that vision to life when Doodles opened its doors in July 2008 — combining Creole cooking with a fierce commitment to locally sourced, organic-whenever-possible ingredients that was ahead of its time for Lexington.
Eggs from Clark Family Farm in Lexington. Grits from Weisenberger Mill in Midway. Ground beef from Elmwood Stock Farm in Georgetown. Country ham from Brownings in Dry Ridge. Produce is picked up from local farms several times a week.

When Melissa Jackson — a Lexington native, country Americana musician, and proud community builder — took over ownership, she made it her mission to deepen Doodles’ roots even further.
Doodles has been named among the top breakfast spots in all of Lexington year after year — a locally-sourced Lexington breakfast spot with the kind of loyal following that fills every table from open to close, six days a week, rain or shine.

Atmosphere
Doodles occupies a beautifully quirky repurposed gas station at the corner of North Limestone and Third Street — all large sunlit windows, mismatched charm, and the kind of warm, energizing morning light that makes everything taste better. ☀️
“Because it’s a breakfast and lunch place, it’s not dark,” says owner Melissa Jackson. “It’s energizing, which is important for breakfast. People are coming in and starting their days out.”
A beloved outdoor patio extends the experience into Lexington’s open air on warmer days — doubling the community gathering space and adding to the buzzy, neighborhood-pub energy that has made Doodles a NoLi district institution since the day it opened. 🌿
Bottom Line
Doodles is Lexington’s most essential morning address — a locally-owned Lexington breakfast institution where New Orleans soul, Kentucky farms, and nearly two decades of community love come together in a former gas station that somehow feels exactly right.
From the legendary dirty shrimp and grits to the beignets that ruin every other pastry forever, Doodles is comfort food with a conscience — and a meal you will talk about all day. ☀️🍳
