Officially recognized as San Antonio’s oldest operating restaurant, this award-winning establishment has survived world wars, highway reconfigurations, and Prohibition by sticking to a straightforward formula of house-brewed drinks and traditional German cooking.

Quick Bite – Schilo’s Delicatessen, San Antonio, TX 🍺
“Papa” Fritz Schilo originally opened the business in 1917 as a saloon in Beeville before relocating to San Antonio.
When Prohibition outlawed alcohol sales in the 1920s, the family pivoted by rolling out soda barrels and brewing their own secret-recipe cane-sugar root beer to keep the doors open.

In 1942, the restaurant moved into its current building—a former currency exchange bank—where the owners converted the bank’s original walk-in money vault into the kitchen’s primary meat cooler.
Today, the Lyons family keeps this historic operation completely independent, preserving its standing as a genuine mom and pops and hole in the wall landmark.
