Some restaurants are good. Some are great. And then there’s Montana Ale Works — Bozeman’s beloved, locally owned dining institution that has spent 25 years setting the gold standard for craft food and drink in the Gallatin Valley.
Sourcing from over 50 local producers, pouring the most local drafts in the city, and cooking every single dish from scratch — this is Montana on a plate, and it is absolutely glorious. 🍺🥩

How Montana Ale Works Won Bozeman’s Hearts
The story of Montana Ale Works doesn’t begin with the restaurant itself — it begins with a pizza oven and a dream. 🍕
Founding partners Mark Taché and Christin Cooper, along with Pete Hendrickson and Steve Shuel, had already transformed Bozeman’s downtown dining scene seven years earlier with MacKenzie River Pizza Co. — a handcrafted, wood-fired pizza concept that introduced the city to the idea that local ingredients and artisan cooking belonged together.
By 2000, the community was hungry for something more — a casual-upscale gathering place that matched Bozeman’s rugged, outdoorsy spirit with genuinely inspired food and a world-class beer program.

Montana Ale Works opened on March 16, 2000, inside a beautifully renovated historic Northern Pacific Railroad freight building on East Main Street — a space with exposed brick, soaring ceilings, and the kind of bones that no new construction can manufacture.
Today, over 50 local producers supply Montana Ale Works with everything from fresh produce and sustainably raised meats to craft cheeses, Montana-distilled spirits, and the finest regional beers — making every dish on the menu a genuine expression of the state it was made in. 🌾
That commitment to the local food system isn’t just a marketing tagline — it’s baked into every plate, from the proprietary blend of pasture-raised Wagyu and Angus chuck sourced exclusively from Montana Wagyu Cattle Co., to the Northern Plains bison that appears across multiple menu items.

Twenty-five years after opening its doors, Montana Ale Works has earned an extraordinary collection of accolades — including Best Restaurant, Best Burger, Best Chef, Best Dessert, Best Happy Hour, and Best Meal for the Money — not by chasing trends, but by staying relentlessly true to the place it calls home. 🏆
Now stewarded by five owners — Mark Taché, Christin Cooper, Sean Faris, Roth Jordan, and Jacob Huder — the restaurant continues to evolve its menu while holding fast to the founding ethos that made it Bozeman’s most beloved dining destination.

Atmosphere
Montana Ale Works occupies one of the most characterful spaces in all of downtown Bozeman — a soaring, exposed-brick railroad freight house built in the 1800s that gives the restaurant a warmth and authenticity no new build could ever replicate.
The energy inside is vibrant and communal, anchored by a long full-service bar pouring over 40 local and regional craft beers on draft alongside 40+ Montana craft spirits — the largest selection of local drafts of any establishment in Bozeman.

It’s the kind of place where after-work crowds, anniversary dinners, and post-hike celebrations all coexist effortlessly — lively enough to feel exciting, warm enough to feel like home. 🏔️
Whether you’re settling in for a leisurely multi-course dinner or stopping in for happy hour specials and pretzel bites, the historic freight house hums with the energy of a restaurant that has genuinely earned its place at the center of its community.
Bottom Line
Montana Ale Works is Bozeman’s crown jewel — 25 years of award-winning, scratch-made food sourced from over 50 local producers, served inside a stunning historic freight house with the best craft beer selection in the valley.
