Conway, South Carolina, is a town built on rivers and quiet charm, and Rivertown Bistro has spent over three decades proving that small towns can serve seriously ambitious food. 🍤
Opened by a couple who fell in love while working in Charleston kitchens together, this locally owned restaurant turned a tiny downtown cafe space into one of the Grand Strand’s most celebrated dining rooms.
From spring rolls stuffed with tasso ham to sushi rolled fresh in-house, the menu reflects two people who built a life and a business side by side. It’s Southern hospitality served with a genuinely creative twist.

How Rivertown Bistro’s won Conway’s hearts
Rivertown Bistro’s story begins with Darren and Cyndi Smith, who met while Darren worked as executive chef at Shem Creek Bar & Grill in Charleston. 💕
The two started dating, and as Darren later put it, “we started dating, and here we are, 34 years later.” At just 25 years old, the couple moved to Cyndi’s hometown of Conway in 1994 and opened Rivertown Bistro in a small existing cafe space downtown.
Cyndi brought a business finance degree from the College of Charleston, while Darren brought serious kitchen chops, and together they built something that immediately stood out in a town that, in Darren’s words, only had “a couple of little restaurants” at the time.

The restaurant’s growth wasn’t without hardship. A devastating fire struck late on the night of January 30, 2008, closing the Bistro for just over a year, but the community rallied around the Smiths in a way that speaks to how deeply this restaurant had already woven itself into Conway’s identity. 🔥
Of the 21 employees working before the fire, 19 returned when the doors reopened on February 9, 2009, a remarkable show of loyalty from a staff that clearly believed in what the Smiths had built.
That resilience became part of the restaurant’s story, and locals responded by packing the dining room even harder once it reopened.
Rivertown Bistro has held onto its reputation as one of Conway’s top dining destinations ever since, a title earned through genuine staying power rather than hype.

What keeps the farm-to-table philosophy alive today traces back to the restaurant’s earliest days, when their landlord George Jenkins showed up with crates of fresh produce and offered to supply the kitchen directly.
That relationship helped shape Darren’s approach to sourcing, and today the Bistro partners with local farms like Low Country Farms of SC for many of its ingredients. 🌽
The menu blends Southern roots with global techniques, whether it’s a sushi roll built around blackened catfish and boiled peanuts or a Low Country twist on Asian flavors.
That fusion of creative American cuisine and coastal Carolina tradition is exactly what has kept diners coming back to Rivertown Bistro for more than 30 years. 🦐
