Inside a 116-year-old building at the corner of Fourth and Franklin sits Leeds Public House, the gastropub Denise and John Burns opened in 2019 to honor one of Michigan City’s founding families.
The historic structure once housed a hospital, then a bank, then an Irish pub before this couple transformed it into a locally sourced dining destination.
Their instinct to blend history with contemporary comfort food turned a quiet corner of downtown into one of the city’s favorite tables. 🏛️

How Leeds Public House won Michigan City’s hearts
Denise Burns and her husband, John, did not choose the historic Leeds building by chance.
The structure traces back to 1835, when Daniel Leeds and his family first settled in Michigan City, and the building itself was constructed in 1837 before being rebuilt in 1903.
Before Leeds Public House, the space had cycled through several identities, including a bank and, most recently, Ryan’s Irish Pub, which closed in 2018. 🕰️
The restaurant opened its doors in July 2019, and its combination of historic charm and elevated comfort food quickly resonated with residents.

Locals appreciated that the Burns family made a genuine effort to integrate into the community, featuring work from local artists and photography of the city and lakefront throughout the dining room.
The addition of an outdoor bar, a spacious patio, and fire pits gave Michigan City a new communal gathering spot, one that felt equally suited to a casual weeknight dinner or a celebratory weekend brunch.
That balance of respecting the past while building something new for the present is exactly what turned Leeds Public House into a hometown favorite. ❤️
