How Alpine Inn Restaurant won Hill City’s hearts

Hill City began with the 1876 gold rush, and by 1883 the discovery of tin had attracted enough English capital to form the Harney Peak Tin Mining, Milling, and Manufacturing Company.

That company built the Harney Peak Hotel for its mining executives, and it became a favorite for Sunday diners and a hangout for mining, timbering, and railroad men. ⛏️

The town earned the nickname “one Mile of Hell,” thanks to more than fifteen bars lining Main Street, so the dining room has seen plenty of rowdiness and a few gunfights.

Two major fires came and went, and the hotel and dining room kept going until 1934.

Then a Stuttgart native changed everything.

Waldraut “Wally” Matush came to the United States from Stuttgart, Germany, in 1961, moved to Hill City in 1970, and bought the hotel in 1974.

After a decade of housing various businesses, the building became the Alpine Inn in 1984. 🇩🇪

Wally called the warm atmosphere here Gemütlichkeit, and several of her original employees stayed for years because the place felt like family.

In 1996, she handed the reins to her daughter, Monika, who carries on the traditions her mother started. ❤️

The inn is still family-owned and operated, and it has been noted in national and international publications for its homey atmosphere and its meals.

The menu does the rest.

Lunch is a broader affair, with ethnic European and contemporary dishes on the menu. 🥨

Dinner is famously streamlined and built around filet mignon and homemade desserts. 🍰

Few places in the Black Hills dining scene are this confident about doing less, and that focus is a big part of the inn’s legend.

The inn is known as a hometown restaurant, and it is especially pretty when decorated for special occasions. 👻

Even the owners joke that the walls could tell stories that Hollywood couldn’t match.
