On a quiet stretch of Barnard Street in downtown Andover, Massachusetts, a humble Italian cafe opened its doors in 2009 with just $1,500 between two cousins and an enormous amount of heart. 🇮🇹

La Rosa’s Italian Cafe & Bar has since grown from that scrappy little sandwich counter into one of the most celebrated family-owned Italian restaurants in Andover, MA — a true North Shore institution built on Sicilian heritage, scratch-made food, and a stubborn belief that great cooking is the best way to hug someone. ❤️

How La Rosa’s Won Andover’s Hearts

Chef Paul LaRosa, a Saugus native who had been cooking since the age of 16 along Route 1 — from Papa Gino’s to Kelly’s Roast Beef — teamed up with his cousin and business partner Michael Cammarata to open their first restaurant together in a small space in downtown Andover.

Paul had $600 in the bank, borrowed $900 from his father, and the two cousins were making just $400 a day.

They couldn’t afford to pay staff — family filled in the gaps — and there were plenty of moments in those early days where the whole venture could have easily collapsed.

But Paul had something that couldn’t be taught: a lifetime of Sicilian food traditions passed down through his family, particularly his grandfather Nonno Angelo, whose Sunday sauce — started before Mass and simmered low all morning — became the flavor that would define everything La Rosa’s would eventually stand for.

That philosophy — deeply personal, deeply Italian, and deeply genuine — translated directly into the food, and customers felt it immediately. 🍝

The menu grew from simple, handcrafted gourmet sandwiches — like the now-legendary Angry Sicilian — into a full dining experience featuring handmade pastas, elevated Sicilian-inspired entrees, and a bar program worthy of a fine-dining destination.

Word spread fast, and before long, La Rosa’s had earned a reputation as the go-to authentic Italian restaurant on the North Shore of Massachusetts — a place consistently voted among the best Italian restaurants in Andover year after year. 🏆

The success of La Rosa’s allowed Paul and Michael to grow the LaRosa Hospitality Group into a four-restaurant empire in downtown Andover, with La Fina Steakhouse, Privé Lounge, and The Autograph American Tavern all following in La Rosa’s footsteps.

But through all of that growth, the original La Rosa’s on Barnard Street has remained the heart of it all — the place where the story began, and the place where scratch cooking, Sicilian pride, and the warmth of a family kitchen are still delivered with the same passion as those very first $400 days. 🌟
