Deep in the heart of Uptown Sioux Falls, a sandwich shop has quietly become one of South Dakota’s most beloved dining destinations — and the story behind it is as satisfying as the food itself.

Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen, tucked along the historic Main Avenue corridor, is the brainchild of two longtime friends who turned a shared obsession with great food into something truly special for their hometown. 🥪

How Bread & Circus Won Sioux Falls’ Hearts

Owners Barry Putzke and Jordan Taylor grew up together in Sioux Falls, attending Roosevelt High School, before eventually parting ways to chase their respective dreams on the West Coast.

Barry pursued a career in finance in Portland, Oregon, while Jordan enrolled in culinary school to follow his passion for west coast farm-to-table cooking — soaking up everything that made Portland’s food scene so vibrant and forward-thinking. 🌿

Nearly 15 years later, the two friends hatched a plan that would change Sioux Falls dining forever.

They packed up, moved back home, and in 2017opened Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen at 600 N. Main Ave — a chef-driven sandwich concept rooted in scratch-made technique, local sourcing, and a genuine love for bold, adventurous flavor. 🙌

Jordan, who serves as chef, describes the concept as “highbrow stoner food” — meaning seriously refined technique and deeply satisfying flavors, served casually in a sandwich format that makes it all feel approachable and unpretentious. 😄

BuzzFeed named Bread & Circus the “Best Sandwich Spot in South Dakota”, a nod to the restaurant’s knack for elevating everyday comfort food into something genuinely memorable. 🏆

Then came the moment that truly put them on the map: Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives filmed at the location, with Guy Fieri himself digging into the menu — and after that, there was no looking back.

Their commitment to local and regional sourcing also plays a huge role in building community trust.

The kitchen works to shorten the distance between the field and the plate, supporting local producers and giving regulars confidence that what’s on their plate is fresh, thoughtful, and made with care.

It’s the kind of place where people become regulars after just one visit — and where even their most loyal fans are still discovering new favorites every season.

The Sioux Falls sandwich scene has a new benchmark, and Barry and Jordan set it together. 🤝

Atmosphere

Bread & Circus lives inside a space in historic Uptown Sioux Falls that perfectly mirrors what the owners set out to create: casual, warm, and completely unpretentious.

The restaurant features a heated patio that seats around 90 people — built into a former loading dock — giving it a laid-back, industrial-cool energy that feels distinctly Bread & Circus.

Inside, the vibe is relaxed and convivial, a place where you’re encouraged to try something new and feel completely at home doing it, whether you’re a first-timer or a five-times-a-week regular.

The beer program matches the food’s ambition — with 10 local and regional taps exclusively, because, as Barry puts it, “You’ll never find a domestic on here.” 🍺

Bottom Line

Craft sandwiches inspired by Portland’s farm-to-table scene, a BuzzFeed “Best in South Dakota” nod, and a Guy Fieri stamp of approval — Bread & Circus is the real deal. Come hungry, stay for the Naughty Fries, and don’t skip the beer list.
