How Sullivan’s Won Lewisville’s BBQ Lovin’ Hearts

The story of Sullivan Old Town BBQ is one of grit, generosity, and smoke — in the best possible way. 🙌

Owner Terry Sullivan opened the restaurant in January 2020, right inside a historic building that served as a meat market for 42 years — and had been a beloved fixture in Old Town Lewisville long before that.

The timing? Rough doesn’t even begin to cover it.

By February of that same year, COVID-19 had swept through Texas, indoor dining was shutting down, and Sullivan was lucky to sell two briskets a day.

He nearly closed his doors for good.

But instead of walking away, Terry made a decision that would change everything.

He created a program called “The Whatever Bucket” — anyone who lost their job, a single parent, someone who was hungry, could drop in whatever they could afford and walk out with a sandwich, chips, banana pudding, and a bottle of water. 💛

No questions asked.

Word spread through social media, donations poured in from across the country, and within weeks Sullivan was feeding around 100 people a week.

Later that year, he launched another initiative — “Texas BBQ for Senior Texans” — delivering free BBQ meals straight to the doors of elderly residents who couldn’t leave their homes. 🏠

The community didn’t forget it.

The City of Lewisville stepped up first, encouraging city employees to order from Sullivan’s to help keep the lights on.

Then customers showed up — and kept showing up.

“There’s something to be said about truly serving people, having a heart for people and living above the circumstances of this world,” Sullivan said.

Today, the restaurant is a full house most days, with longtime Lewisville residents sharing tables and new friendships forming over plates of brisket and collard greens. 🤝

This is exactly the kind of place that reminds you why local businesses matter.

  • Prime Brisket: The crown jewel of the menu — smoked low and slow over Texas Post Oak, this brisket is fork-tender with serious bark and a gorgeous smoke ring; reviewers on TripAdvisor say it rivals anything they’ve had in Austin or Lockhart.

  • Jalapeño Cheddar Sausage: Made in-house and loaded with smoky, spicy, cheesy goodness — one of the most talked-about items on the menu, with Yelp reviewers consistently calling it a must-order.

  • Pork Spare Ribs: Available by the bone, half rack, or full rack, these ribs come out fall-off-the-bone tender and seasoned to perfection; multiple TripAdvisor guests called them “the best ribs ever.”

  • Pulled Pork: Smoky, juicy, and consistently praised across visitor reviews — a classic done right.

  • Fried Okra: A fan-favorite side that keeps coming up in nearly every review — crispy, perfectly seasoned breading with a tender bite inside; multiple guests say it’s the best they’ve ever had. 🌿

  • The Texas Sandwich: Brisket, pulled pork, sausage, and jalapeños all piled high and topped with slaw — it’s a full BBQ platter between two pieces of bread, and it’s absolutely unhinged in the best way possible. 🥪
