Some restaurants earn “institution” status simply by outlasting everything around them, and in Hanover, New Hampshire, Jesse’s Restaurant & Tavern has done exactly that for nearly five decades. 🌲
Built in a rustic log-cabin style just outside downtown, this steak-and-seafood staple has fed generations of Upper Valley families, Dartmouth parents, and visiting politicians alike. 🥩
What began as a scrappy six-item menu in the mid-1970s has grown into one of the most enduring restaurants in the region, and the story behind its staying power says a lot about what locals actually want from a hometown steakhouse.

How Jesse’s Restaurant won Hanover’s hearts
Jesse’s traces its roots back to 1976, when Marc and Patty Milowsky teamed up with local craftsmen and the late Jesse Ware, founder of Vermont Log Home and Timberpeg Post & Beam Homes, to build a restaurant on a then-undeveloped stretch of Route 120 outside Hanover. 🪵
The restaurant is literally named after Ware, and its log-cabin architecture is a direct nod to his craft.
In the beginning, the menu was as sparse as the surrounding hillside, just steak and potatoes, a seafood dish or two, and the salad bar the restaurant has kept since day one, but that simplicity is exactly what built its first loyal following among families visiting their kids at Dartmouth College.

The Milowskys ran Jesse’s for over 40 years before selling the restaurant, along with sister property Molly’s, to their longtime director of operations, Tony Barnett, and his wife, Erin, in 2018. 🏔️
In 2025, ownership passed again, this time to Patrick Reed, who started at Jesse’s two decades earlier as a salad prep cook and worked his way up to general manager before finally becoming an owner himself.
Reed has been explicit about keeping the restaurant “as the same as possible,” preserving the rustic decor and the hearty American menu of aged steaks, Maine lobster, and seafood classics that generations of regulars have come to expect, a rare kind of continuity that keeps longtime customers walking through the same doors decade after decade.
