If you’ve ever blown past Emporia, Kansas, on I-35 without stopping, you’ve been making a serious mistake.
Just a couple of minutes off the Burlingame Road exit sits Do-B’s — a family-owned, Cajun-kissed burger barn that has quietly earned a reputation as one of the most beloved hidden gem burger spots in Kansas. 🍔
From road-trippers making pit stops to devoted locals who come in multiple times a week, this unassuming little diner on East 12th Avenue is proof that the best things in life are found off the beaten path.

How Do-B’s Won Emporia’s Hearts
The story of Do-B’s begins with owner Daryn Bontrager — a man who turned a corporate layoff into one of the greatest things to ever happen to Emporia’s food scene. 🙌
After spending years perfecting smoked meats, cooking for competitions, and catering events on the side, Daryn headed north to Alaska, where he landed a job at a local burger spot in Anchorage.
He came back to Kansas with serious culinary chops, a handful of top-secret family recipes, and a dream to open his own place.
That dream became Do-B’s in March 2011 — and the name itself is pure family: a nod to Daryn’s initials and his childhood love of the classic kids’ TV show Romper Room, whose famous motto was “Don’t be a Don’t Bee, be a Do-Bee.” 🐝

Every single burger starts with a 100% USDA Choice-grade ground steak patty, sourced from local Flint Hills Family Farms, seasoned with Daryn’s proprietary spice mix, and seared to perfection.
The restaurant uses beef tallow for frying and eliminates seed oils and high-fructose corn syrup from virtually the entire menu — a level of quality and intentionality you rarely see at a casual diner. 🌿
Do-B’s was named one of the Best Local Eats* in Kansas Magazine’s* Readers’ Choice contest and earned recognition as the Best Sandwich Shop in Kansas by Travel and Leisure Magazine — a jaw-dropping achievement for a modest mom-and-pop operation off a highway exit. 🏆
Daryn’s wife and business partner, Leslie Lloyd, continually refreshes the restaurant’s décor and vibe, while family recipes from Daryn’s mom, Terry, and grandmother remain quietly at the heart of every plate. ♥️
