How Urban Bar & Kitchen won Tuscaloosa’s hearts

The story of Urban Bar & Kitchen starts with two friends and a second chance.

Co-owners Gary McGee and Grover Ryans reunited after the pandemic forced McGee to close his previous restaurant, and together they took over a downtown Tuscaloosa building that had twice failed to hold onto a Fuzzy’s Taco Shop.

That gamble paid off in a big way. 🎉

Just three years after opening, Urban Bar & Kitchen was named one of USA Today’s 2024 Restaurants of the Year, the only Alabama restaurant to earn a spot on the national list.

But the accolades only tell part of the story. Locals kept coming back because the food never felt like an afterthought; from the fried green tomatoes to the steak, everything on the menu carries a Southern soul with an inventive edge.

The restaurant’s mission, to “inspire our community by connecting people to real food,” shows up in the way regulars are treated the moment they walk through the door.

Regulars consistently mention owners circulating through the dining room, checking in on tables, and treating first-time guests like longtime regulars.

Add in a menu built on comfort food classics, a buzzing social hour, and a staff that seems genuinely happy to be there, and it becomes obvious why this place has become a true institution. 💛
