Some restaurants earn “institution” status just by surviving. 🕰️ Belfrē Kitchen earned it by becoming genuinely essential to a small Wisconsin town.

Set inside a former 1868 Presbyterian church in downtown Delafield, this restaurant has spent close to a decade building a devoted following on seasonal, locally sourced cooking.

Even a recent change in ownership couldn’t shake its grip on the community. Here’s the story behind one of Lake Country’s most enduring dining destinations.

How Belfrē Kitchen won Delafield’s hearts

Belfrē Kitchen opened its doors in October 2016 inside The Steeple, a beautifully restored 1868 church building in the heart of downtown Delafield, and it quickly became something the town hadn’t quite had before. ⛪

Founder Amy Quinn built the restaurant around a simple idea: good food and good friends, with a menu that leaned heavily on ingredients sourced from nearby Wisconsin farms and foragers.

The name itself nods to the building’s belfry, a small detail that captures how much the restaurant leaned into its historic home rather than trying to hide it.

For almost ten years, that formula worked. The restaurant became known for a menu that changed with the seasons, a genuine commitment to local sourcing, and a dining room that made regulars feel like family and first-time visitors feel like regulars too.

When Quinn announced the restaurant’s closing in January 2026, the community reaction made clear just how deeply Belfrē Kitchen mattered to Delafield.

That reaction is exactly why local restaurateur Llazar Konda stepped in just months later, taking over the space while keeping many of the original team’s familiar faces on staff and preserving the restaurant’s name and spirit. 💛

The result is a menu that now leans into elevated bistro classics and global flavors, while still operating out of the same beloved church that made Belfrē Kitchen a fixture in the first place.
