Tucked into a historic storefront in downtown Wilmington, The Fork n Cork has become the kind of place where regulars know the bartender by name and first-timers leave already planning their next visit.
What began as a scrappy food truck has blossomed into a full-blown neighborhood institution, and its story is as satisfying as its burgers. 🍟
This is not a place chasing trends — it is a place that built its reputation one loaded brioche bun at a time, and locals have happily eaten every bite along the way. 😋

How The Fork n Cork won Wilmington’s hearts
Every legendary restaurant has an origin story, and Fork n Cork’s is genuinely charming: it started as The Patty Wagon Food Truck in 2011, slinging burgers to hungry, late-night crowds around Wilmington until it built such a devoted following that a permanent home became inevitable.
By 2014, the truck rolled into a brick-and-mortar spot on Market Street, and locals who had chased the truck around town for years finally had a place to call their burger headquarters. 🚚➡️🏠
In 2018, Guy Fieri featured Fork n Cork on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, raving about the confit duck wings and Beef Wellington bites — and suddenly a beloved local haunt became a must-stop for burger pilgrims from out of town. 📺🔥

During that same visit, founder James Smith introduced Fieri to a young local student named Ava, who had been bullied by classmates, and together they created a special burger in her honor — Ava’s Burger, served between two bacon waffles — giving her a well-deserved social media win.
Tragically, James Smith passed away in 2023, but his legacy lives on through the staff and menu he built, and the restaurant continues to honor his vision with the same scratch-made, forkin’ good food that built its following in the first place.
The result is a place that feels less like a business and more like a family that happens to serve incredible burgers — which, in a town full of great restaurants, is exactly the kind of gem that turns visitors into regulars. 🍴
