How Satchel’s Pizza Won Gainesville’s Hearts

Founder and owner Satchel Raye grew up in Jacksonville, first learning to make pizza at age 16 at a local pizzeria run by Italian immigrants, and fell in love with the craft long before he had any ambition to open his own place.

He moved to Gainesville in 1986 to attend the University of Florida, and while college turned out not to be his path, something about the city never let him go.

On March 7, 2003, Satchel’s Pizza opened its doors — and Raye’s vision from day one was as much about art and community as it was about dough and sauce.

“I opened Satchel’s Pizza in an attempt to find a way to make a living doing something I truly loved,” Raye said on the restaurant’s 20th anniversary. “Making art and pizza.”
