Monroe, Louisiana doesn’t get talked about as a food destination nearly as often as it should, but Cotton has quietly built one of the most inventive Southern Delta menus in the state. 🌆

Housed inside a 19th-century building that once ran a mail-order liquor business during Prohibition, this locally owned restaurant blends old-school architecture with genuinely creative comfort food.

Owner Dr. Jay Howell opened its doors in downtown Monroe back in 2008, determined to breathe new life into a historic block that hadn’t seen a restaurant in nearly 50 years, and the payoff has been well worth the wait.

How Cotton won Monroe’s hearts

Erected in 1893 as the J.S. Bloch Building, it originally housed one of the South’s first legal mail-order liquor dealerships, since Prohibition banned in-person alcohol sales but never touched mail delivery. 🥃

After Bloch’s business closed, the space cycled through life as a general store, a cafeteria, a bookstore, and eventually a cotton exchange, which is exactly where the restaurant’s name comes from.

When Dr. Howell decided to open Restaurant Cotton here in 2008, he wasn’t just opening a restaurant, he was resurrecting a piece of downtown Monroe’s identity that had sat dormant for decades.

That kind of historic weight gives the space a genuine sense of place that a brand-new build could never fake.

What kept locals hooked, though, was the food itself.

Cotton built its reputation on Southern Delta cuisine, a term the restaurant uses to describe the shared food heritage of Northern Louisiana and Mississippi, executed with a decidedly upscale twist. 🦐

The North Delta Shrimp and Grits quickly became one of the menu’s signature dishes, name-checked repeatedly by longtime regulars as a must-order alongside the Muscovy Duck Wraps.

The other reason Cotton has stuck around for well over a decade comes down to variety without losing focus.

The kitchen moves comfortably between wild game, like the Deer Camp Meatloaf and Venison Schnitzel, and Gulf-inspired seafood dishes like the Louisiana Seafood Platter, all while maintaining a distinctly locally sourced backbone to the menu. 🦌

A robust cocktail and bourbon program, featuring dozens of bourbon selections alongside wines from top American appellations, has turned Cotton into as much of a drinking destination as a dining one.

Add in a lively weekend brunch scene centered on chicken and waffles and Creole catfish, and it’s clear why Cotton has become the anchor of downtown Monroe’s dining revival. 🥞
