Deep in the heart of downtown Brownsville, Texas, just blocks from the Mexican border, sits a century-old burger joint that has been flipping patties since 1922. š
Rutledge Hamburgers isnāt your typical restaurantāitās a time capsule measuring just 5 feet wide by 25 feet long, squeezed into a former alleyway between two buildings.
This tiny treasure has been serving up itty-bitty burgers on the same antique grill for over 100 years, making it one of the oldest eateries in all of Texas. āØ

How Rutledge Hamburgers Won Brownsville Hearts
The story of how Rutledge Hamburgers captured the hearts of generations begins with John and Hilda Rutledge, who started a modest sidewalk hamburger stand in 1922.
Two years later, they purchased the narrow pathway between two buildings for just $65, added a roof and doors on each end, and created something magical.

Hilda Rutledge herself stood behind that grill for decades, flipping her famous little burgers while customers squeezed into the impossibly narrow space.
Her son Martin eventually took over the reins before selling the business in 1995 to Gloria Perezāa woman who first tasted a Rutledge burger in the 1980s when her then-boyfriend (now husband) brought her here.

Gloria had actually worked at the restaurant before becoming its owner, learning from Martin himself who told her to āalways sell quality.ā
That advice became her mantra: āIt is sealed in my mind to sell quality.ā š
What makes this spot truly legendary is the original grill from 1922, still cooking burgers today with only the gas valves ever being replaced.
A century of seasoning locked into that cast iron imparts a flavor to the meat that simply cannot be replicated anywhere else.

Families from across the border in Matamoros make special trips just for these burgersāincluding restaurant owners from Mexico who bring their families to eat here instead of their own establishments!
Ken Lieck, a former Brownsville city manager, has been coming to Rutledge for more than 60 years, with vivid memories of Mrs. Rutledge and her son Martin flipping burgers behind the stove.
Generation after generation, grandparents have brought their children, who then brought their children, creating an unbroken chain of burger devotion spanning nearly a century.
The restaurant was even featured on āThe Texas Bucket Listā television show in 2017, earning the prestigious āBurger of the Weekā designation.
In 2022, the entire city of Brownsville came together to celebrate Rutledgeās 100th anniversary with live performances, chalk art, and burgers selling for just 10 centsāa nod to the restaurantās humble beginnings. š
