Garland, Texas may not be the first city that comes to mind when you think of world-class pizza — but that’s exactly what makes stumbling upon Fortunate Son feel like such a delicious little secret.
Sitting right on the revitalized downtown Garland square, this New Haven-style pizza house is turning heads across the entire Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex — one ultra-thin, perfectly charred pie at a time. 🍕🤌

How Fortunate Son Won Garland’s Hearts
Fortunate Son is the brainchild of chef David Peña and the team behind the beloved Goodfriend Burger House, who didn’t just decide to open a pizza restaurant — they studied for it like a final exam.
Fortunate Son officially opened in March 2024, and with it arrived something the DFW dining scene had never seen before: the only New Haven-style apizza restaurant in the entire Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
The kitchen’s sourdough crust is the result of long fermentation and carefully calculated hydration — staying crispy all the way through without charring aggressively at the edges.
For the tomato sauce, Peña experimented exhaustively before landing on simply prepared San Marzano tomatoes — pureed with spices and salt to let the bright, clean tomato flavor speak for itself.

On one Saturday night in May 2024, the wait stretched to a full hour — just weeks after opening — with guests happily waiting across the square at a neighboring bar, trading texts for a table rather than miss their shot at a pie.
Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports made the trip to Garland to film one of his legendary One Bite Pizza Reviews — a visit that sent a fresh wave of pizza pilgrims straight to downtown Garland and cemented the restaurant’s standing on a national stage. 🎤
The city of Garland actually approached the Goodfriend team about opening here, as part of a broader effort to revitalize the historic town square — and Fortunate Son has become one of its crown jewels, helping turn downtown Garland dining into a genuine destination. 🏙️
From a furniture store to a pizza landmark — that’s a glow-up for the ages.

Atmosphere
Fortunate Son occupies a former furniture store on the historic Garland town square — floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows still intact — giving the space an airy, industrial-cool character that feels unlike any pizza joint in Texas.

A back wall of windows lets you peer directly into the kitchen — from the massive dough mixer all the way to the 650-degree oven — making every table feel like a front-row seat to the craft. 🔥
The horseshoe-shaped bar, high tops, booths, and a partly shaded outdoor patio give the space a lively beer garden energy, perfectly complemented by an outstanding selection of local craft beers and cocktails.
Bottom Line
The only New Haven-style apizza in all of DFW, a Dave Portnoy-approved menu, and a sourdough crust fermented to crispy, charred perfection — Fortunate Son is a pizza pilgrimage worth every mile of the drive.
