What happens when an NBA All-Star decides his grandma’s peach cobbler deserves a spotlight bigger than the family reunion table?
Kevin Johnson had that exact thought, and it sparked something special in downtown Los Angeles.
Fixins Soul Kitchen isn’t just another restaurant—it’s a love letter to Black family traditions, built on recipes passed down through generations.
Locals keep coming back because this place serves more than fried chicken; it serves a piece of home.

How Fixins Soul Kitchen Won Local Hearts
Kevin Johnson grew up in Oak Park, Sacramento, where soul food was the heartbeat of every family gathering and Sunday dinner meant something sacred.
His Grandma Glady’s peach cobbler became legend at BBQs and reunions, sparking friendly competitions over who made the best collard greens or potato salad on the block.
After playing 12 seasons in the NBA and traveling to 28 cities, Johnson craved that home cooking wherever he went but could not find it done quite right.

He noticed soul food restaurants offered rich experiences, but he believed he could build on the best traditions and redefine the American soul food experience for a new generation.
In 2019, Johnson and his wife Michelle created Fixins to combine his love of Black culture with her obsession for great food and warm hospitality.
The restaurant incorporates family recipes from Johnson’s broader network of friends and associates, featuring their best dishes and favorites from across the country.

Johnson wanted to create a space that celebrates African American history and traditions in an inclusive environment that welcomes everyone regardless of background.
The Los Angeles location at LA Live opened in the space formerly occupied by Detroit Seafood Market, bringing vibrant energy to the heart of downtown.
Guests experience what the brand calls “Black Excellence” through delicious cuisine, friendly service, and a spotless restaurant that feels like stepping into someone’s well-loved home.

The concept has expanded to four locations including Sacramento, Tulsa’s Black Wall Street district, and Detroit’s Paradise Valley area, each honoring local Black history.
Each location pays homage to local Black history while staying true to the scratch-made soul food mission that started in Grandma Glady’s kitchen decades ago.
Locals care about Fixins because it feels like family cooking with professional polish, not just another chain trying to cash in on comfort food trends.
