Tucked into a former Army Navy Store on North Higgins Avenue, Plonk does not look like a place that would change how Missoula eats and drinks. 🍷
But this independent wine bar and restaurant has spent over a decade proving that a small mountain town can support a genuinely sophisticated dining scene.
This is how two friends and a shared bottle of wine built one of Montana’s most beloved hidden gems.

How Plonk won Missoula’s hearts
Plonk’s Missoula story actually starts in Bozeman, where the concept was dreamed up by Earl Langeland and his business partner Michael Wilson before Michael Ochsner and Brett Evje purchased it in February 2009.
As Ochsner tells it, the decision came down to a single bottle of 2005 Orin Swift The Prisoner that convinced him a wine bar could thrive in small-town Montana.
After watching the Bozeman location flourish, Evje and Ochsner set their sights on Missoula, eventually finding the right spot on North Higgins Avenue in 2011.
Plonk Missoula opened its doors in March 2013, bringing the same wine-forward, globally inspired concept to a new crowd of regulars. 🍇

What makes Plonk a genuine Missoula institution rather than just another wine bar is its refusal to stay in one culinary lane.
The kitchen blends Western, Asian, French, and Spanish influences into a single evolving menu, sourcing local Montana ingredients whenever the season allows.
Add an extensive by-the-glass wine list using Coravin technology, a rotating cocktail program, and a rooftop patio strung with fairy lights, and it is easy to see why both Evje and Ochsner have been named semifinalists for the James Beard Foundation’s Outstanding Restaurateur award.
Locals do not just visit Plonk for a special occasion; they treat it as a regular gathering spot for happy hour, a shared plate, or a glass of something new. 🌆

Atmosphere
Plonk splits its personality between a moody, chandelier-lit dining room built for intimate conversation and a rooftop patio that turns into one of downtown Missoula’s best warm-weather hangouts. 🌇
Think comfortable couches, candlelight, and a soundtrack that leans into the restaurant’s music-forward branding.

The vibe shifts from romantic date-night energy indoors to a livelier, social scene upstairs when the fairy lights come on.
It is upscale enough to feel like an occasion, yet relaxed enough that locals treat it as a regular haunt.
Bottom Line
Visit for an ever-changing menu that pulls from four different culinary traditions, a wine list built by a certified sommelier, and a rooftop patio that feels like Missoula’s best-kept secret. Add reliably good service and a genuinely local ownership story, and this hidden gem earns every bit of its reputation. 🍷✨
