Great restaurants sometimes come from the smallest beginnings, and Banana Blossom in Gretna, Louisiana, is proof. 🍜
Founder Jimmy Cho opened the restaurant in 2009 with just a handful of tables in a small strip mall storefront, drawing on memories of his childhood in his parents’ noodle and coffee shop in Sakon Nakhon, Thailand.
What started as a modest Thai cafe grew into one of the West Bank’s most beloved dining destinations, known for blending authentic Thai cooking with the bold flavors of New Orleans.

How Banana Blossom won Gretna’s hearts
Jimmy Cho’s story with Banana Blossom began with traditional Thai cooking, and the restaurant quickly built a following for its authenticity in its early strip mall days. 🌶️
Over time, Cho started folding in a wider range of influences, blending his native Thailand’s flavors with New Orleans classics and other global riffs, creating a genuinely unique spin on Thai food that couldn’t be found anywhere else on the West Bank.
In 2018, that growing popularity led Cho to relocate the restaurant to a larger, renovated corner building in downtown Gretna, transforming what had once been a rundown storefront into a casual, contemporary dining room.

That willingness to experiment is exactly what turned Banana Blossom into a genuine local favorite rather than just another Thai restaurant.
The menu now features Creole-influenced dishes alongside Thai standards, from crawfish basil fried rice to shrimp and grits, giving longtime regulars something new to try while still honoring the traditional dishes that built the restaurant’s reputation in the first place.
Cho has spoken about food as something that brings people together, a philosophy rooted in watching customers gather at his parents’ market stall growing up.
That personal, community-driven approach to hospitality is a big part of why Banana Blossom has remained a fixture in Gretna for well over a decade. 💛
