What is the perfect definition of a hole in the wall? Here’s my thoughts: a small, well-established place with excellent food, reasonable prices, and friendly staff. Maybe it looks a little shabby-chic from the outside, but the inside is clean and welcoming. Bonus points if it’s next to a rail road track. Sound about right? I just described Johnnie’s Tavern.

Fat Baxter’s
Fat Baxter’s has a lot going for it. The menu is simple, but everything on it is delicious and reasonably priced. The owners and staff are friendly go out of their way to make sure everyone is taken care of. If you’re looking for entertainment, they have live music on Mondays, and if you’re really looking to liven things up, there’s karaoke on Friday! They have a solid regular menu, with daily specials to keep things fresh, even including some breakfast options for the late risers! Off the beaten path but worth its weight in gold, Fat Baxter’s absolutely deserves a place in our list of the best hole-in-the-wall spots in Columbus.

The Walrus
Possibly the most literal hole in the wall so far on our list, The Walrus is an unassuming storefront in old Downtown Columbus, complete with a glass garage door in lieu of a typical window. Once you’re inside, though, the place comes alive. 24 big screen TV’s, 30 beers on tap, a full bar, and a big menu elevate this dive to the perfect hang out spot. With live music, karaoke, and trivia nights, The Walrus is the perfect place to spend an evening with your favorite people.

Top Review: “The Old Mohawk is one of my favorite places in Columbus. I loved the neighborhood feel and the ambiance of The Old Mohawk. Our servers have always been super with just the proper amount of attentiveness. I got the Mother Mohawkas, my favorite signature item, grilled roast beef, and homemade chicken salad topped with Swiss cheese on marble rye bread and served with a side of caraway horseradish sauce. Wow. It sounds ridiculous, but it is delicious. I also enjoy Santa Fe Beef Quesadilla Taco beef, black beans, lettuce, corn relish, and diced tomato. It was grilled in a sun-dried tomato tortilla, served with salsa and sour cream. One of my wife’s favorites is Crustless Pizza, Penne tossed with marinara, topped with mozzarella and provolone cheese, and baked to a golden brown. Starting its life as a pharmacy, Over the Counter still oozes that wonderful 50’s charm, albiet as a diner, now. Their slogan is, “Everyone has a seat at the counter,” and they mean it. Catering to every possible taste, their menu features a wide array of entrees that can be enjoyed at a table, at the bar, or outside on the patio, if the weather permits. Be sure to try this place out. Come for the vibes, stay for the food.
